About me

I've been copy editing for more than 34 years, so I have a few thoughts on editing.

Right now, I teach editing and other journalism classes at KU's William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. I previously served as the editorial adviser for The University Daily Kansan (and still mentor students there). Before that, I was a visiting news editor and assistant professor of editing at the Missouri School of Journalism, and before that led the copy/design/web desk at @whignews in Quincy, Illinois.

Most of my journalism career has been spent in editing. (I started as a reporter but admit I didn't like covering the crime beat.)

I served on the Executive Committee of the American Copy Editors Society for 12 years and am a lifetime member of ACES.

Follow me on on Twitter @gerrrib for lots of great copy editing tips and thoughts on journalism.
